Competition Preparedness

Competition Application
Each competitor must fill out a competition application and practice form. The forms need to be signed by a Board Member and your skating coach. It is recommended that all competitors sign up for at least one practice ice prior to competing. The applications need to be sent in with a self-addressed envelope and a USFSA number. Either mail the application by the designated deadline or turn it in to the coach collecting the applications at the rink. Contact your coach for a competition application if you did not receive one.

Lodging and Carpools
All skaters are responsible for arranging their own lodging and carpool for the competition event. This is an additional expense to the skaters. A list of recommended hotels is included with the application.

Competion Clothing

• You need a skating dress, new tan skating tights with no holes, new or clean laces, polished skates and a whilte or matching skating sweater.
• The black spots on skates can be removed by using nail polish remover or saddle soap.
• You need a back-up copy of your music, an extra skating dress and extra laces. Usually you have a different dress for each event in which you compete, but this is not required. The back-up copy of the CD is kept with each skater in her skate bag.
• Hair must be pulled back away from your face and be very neat. Most skaters wear make-up because the skaters look washed-out on the ice without it.

Off-Ice Appearance
All competitors must have a clean, neat appearance off the ice. No old, faded jeans or holes in your pants. A figure-skating jacket is recommended to wear when at the competition.

Competition Recommendations

• You must be at the rink one hour prior to your event. This is very important because the competition could run early and you do not want to miss your event.
• You must register at the front desk when you arrive. You tell the competition staff your name, the event in which you are competing and that your coach will turn in your CD.
• You will receive a program and gift bag. The program will give you the times you will compete. You must have a back-up CD!
• When you are competing, you must sign in with the monitor. If you do not tell them that you are there you will not be competing. Each skater will get a five minute warm-up before competing. It is recommended that you stretch before you warm up. During the warm-up you should stroke around the rink, warm-up spins followed by jumps. All skaters should go through their program during the warm-up You are allowed to come over to your coach during the warm-up for some last-minute pointers. Please use the full ice during warm-up.

If you are doing a compulsory program it can be at either end of the arena. Practice your compulsory program at the end in which you will be competing. Skate your program as many times as you can at practice so you do not get confused or disoriented when you are competing in a new rink.

Please come watch and support all of the Steamboat skaters when they are competing.

If you have any questions regarding the competition, please ask your coach. All coaches will be charging a fee for the competition. There are traveling expenses for the coaches (food, lodging, gas) as well. These expenses are divided equally amoung the skaters attending the competition. The coaches charge for attending a practice and putting the skater on for the competition. This is usually a $10 fee each time. If you have any questions about competition expenses please talk to your coach before you go to the event.
